Quercus robur f. fastigiata

The view from the office window - ©Penelope Hellyer

There was no time to daydream but when strongly and fleetingly the sun would shine through as it set and the garden was bathed in gold, the contrast so stark but so striking, against troubled skies, then it was gone, leaving me to reflect on what a magical place Orchards was.

Quercus robur f. fastigiata is the column to the left of the picture. A stunning example of the common upright oak, perhaps more beautiful in the winter than during the summer.
